There are simple tasks and then there are incredibly simple tasks. Boiling water is even simpler than that. But hey, nobody’s calling you a moron—there’s a first time for everything.

Step 1: Choose pot
Choose a pot with a greater volume than the amount of water you plan to boil. Do so in private, so nobody’s there to say, « Uh, duh. »

Step 2: Pour water
Pour fresh, cold tap water into the pot. Make sure there’s at least 3 inches of space between the rim of the pot and the surface of the water.

Tip
If you’re boiling water to cook with (and not just for fun) you’ll be adding something to it, so be sure to leave enough room for whatever you’re cooking, too.

Step 3: Place pot on burner
Turn the burner to high, place the pot on the burner, and cover the pot with a lid that fits snugly. This keeps in the heat and helps the water boil faster.

Step 4: Watch the pot
They say a watched pot never boils, but that’s not literally true. First, steam will form between the water and the lid; next, small bubbles will appear around the bottom and edges of the pot; finally, the bubbles will become large enough to break the surface of the water.

Step 5: Boil water
Once large bubbles are flowing in steady streams from the bottom to the top of the pot, the water is boiling. That’s it! You’ve done it! Cue the trumpets and congratulate yourself—you’re at least as smart as a not-so-smart monkey.

It may look like plain old iced tea, but this drink—invented near Long Island’s Jones Beach in the 1970s—is one potent potation and the East Coast’s answer to the Zombie.

Step 1: Fill with ice
Fill the shaker with ice.

Step 2: Add vodka, rum, & gin
Add 1/2 an ounce of vodka, 1/2 an ounce of rum, and pour in 1/2 an ounce of gin.

Step 3: Add triple sec, tequila, & lemon juice
Continue to add the alcohol. Add 1/2 an ounce of triple sec, now add 1/2 an ounce of tequila, and pour in 1 ounce of lemon juice.

Step 4: Add sugar
Drop in 1 teaspoon of sugar.

Tip
Some recipes will call for sour mix, but using lemon juice and sugar instead can give a fresher, more consistent flavor.

Step 5: Shake
Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.

Step 6: Strain into glass
Strain the contents of the shaker into the glass.

Step 7: Fill with ice
Fill the highball glass about halfway with ice.

Step 8: Add cola
Top off the glass with cola to add the color of an iced tea.

Tip
For a Long Beach Iced Tea, swap cranberry juice for the cola.

Step 9: Stir & drink
Add the straw, stir, and sip with caution—this one’s got a nasty undertow.

Kroongetuige Nick zit in een spannende rechtszaak tegen over zogeheten maffiabazen. De rechercheurs van de FBI willen een deal met hem sluiten. Nick sluit deze deal, gaat getuigen en krijgt in ruil daarvoor een compleet nieuwe identiteit. Hij verhuist en zijn nieuwe leventje in Omerta Falls kan beginnen. Alles verloopt voorspoedig… of toch niet?

Achtergrond commercial:
De film ‘Getuige’ is een internationale productie en werd in 2005 opgenomen. De opnames vonden plaats in een leegstand pand in Vancouver, Canada. Andere scènes werden gefilmd in een voormalige rechtszaal die nu dienst doet als museum. De naam ‘Omerta Falls’ is fictief. Het woord ‘Omerta’ is in de maffiawereld een code voor zwijgplicht. Acteur Bartolo Raffaele speelt de grote maffiabaas en zijn partner is Christopher Maggi. Maggi kreeg in 2005 een rol in de beroemde film ‘Sopranos’. Door de komst van het internet kon de beleving rond de films worden verrijkt. Zo werd voor ‘Getuige’ een ringtone ontwikkeld en een game.

Na een dag hard werken heb je helemaal geen zin om ook nog boodschappen te gaan doen. Maar goed, plicht roept! Met een volle winkelwagen en ook nog een aparte boodschappentas vol loopt de jongeman de supermarkt uit. Voor het oog een alledaagse situatie krijgt een onverwachte wending…

Achtergrond commercial:
In het voorjaar van 2005 riepen wij iedereen op om zijn of haar eigen idee in te sturen. Uit de ruim 900 ideeën werd Frans van Gerwen als winnaar geselecteerd. Hij mocht samen met de regisseur de regie bepalen. De opnames vonden plaats in de parkeergarage van de Belastingdienst in Amsterdam. Deze parkeergarage had namelijk een prachtige steile helling die nodig was voor de film. De betonnen muur werd gedeeltelijk nagemaakt en de ingang werd omgetoverd tot de ingang van een supermarkt. De originele onderdelen van de Ferrari uit 1999 werden vervangen door plastic onderdelen. Vervolgens is de Ferrari ook echt in elkaar geslagen voor de levensechte beelden. In het kleine grijs-witte autootje zat een stuntman die elke keer net op tijd moest wegrijden. Dat ging elke keer ook maar net goed! Voor deze film waren vier identieke boodschappen-karretjes nodig: eentje die heel hard kon rijden, eentje met camera aan de voorkant, eentje met camera tussen de wieltjes en een gewone. De tas scheurde op commando open door een trektouwtje. De twee hoofdrolspelers komen uit België. Deze film behaalde de derde plaats bij de Gouden Loeki-verkiezing van 2005.

Never picked up a paintbrush? Don’t worry. You can still paint a wall like a pro!

Step 1: Smooth bumps & wipe
If painting a new wall with no previous paint, use sandpaper to smooth any bumps. If there are any holes, spackle and sand them. Then wipe with a damp rag.

Step 2: Cover trim & floor
Cover the trim with blue painter’s tape and cover the floor with a drop cloth.

Step 3: Apply primer
Apply a thick coat of primer with a thickly padded roller. This will hide any surface imperfections and keep the paint from peeling. Allow the primer to fully dry.

Tip
Choose paint colors a shade lighter than what you really want—colors often dry darker than you expect—and test them on a small, discreet spot.

Step 4: Paint edges
Tackle the edges first. Using a two- or three-inch brush, apply a band of paint along the edges of the ceiling, windows, doors, baseboards, and cabinets. This is called ‘cutting in.’

Tip
Small rooms take about one or two gallons for the first coat; the second coat takes about half as much.

Step 5: Use roller to paint
Pour paint into a roller pan and use the roller to paint in an up and down motion. One technique: roll out a W shape in paint and then spread it evenly into a square.

Tip
Don’t paint from side to side—it can look streaky.

Step 6: Wait for 1st coat to dry
Wait an hour or so for the first coat to dry.

Tip
Want to make it dry faster? Put some fans in the room.

Step 7: Apply 2nd coat
Apply the second coat with a fresh roller pad with a lighter shag. Use less pressure the second time around—just make sure the paint is distributed evenly.

Step 8: Fill in spots
Use a two-inch brush—or even a small painter’s brush from an art store—to fill in or even out any spots you missed or that are too bulky or streaky.

Step 9: Let dry & remove tape
Once the second coat is dry (in about an hour) carefully remove the painter’s tape.

Step 10: Enjoy wall
Enjoy your newly painted wall!
