It’s sad we know, but try not to cry—that onion wants to be cut up and eaten. You’re just helping it fulfill its destiny.
Step 1: Remove skin
Remove the outer layer of papery skin from the onion, cutting the stem off and then peeling the skin down toward the root end in strips.
Step 2: Grasp knife
Grasp the long knife in your dominant hand, holding the handle close to the blade with three fingers: your middle, ring, and pinkie. Curl your forefinger around one side of the blade while holding your thumb on the opposite side.
Step 3: Position blade
Grip one side of the onion with your non-knife-wielding hand to hold it steady. Position the blade so that it will slice the onion in half lengthwise, from the root end to stem end.
Step 4: Cut in half
Cut the onion in half.
Tip
To prevent yourself from tearing up when chopping onions, you can try an old folk remedy, like sucking an ice cube or balancing a lemon wedge on your upper lip, but the best method is to keep a box of tissues close by.
Step 5: Lay face down
Lay each onion half cut-side down on the cutting board.
Step 6: Slice horizontally
Turn one onion half so the stem end is on your knife-wielding side. Holding it down with the fingertips of your other hand, position your blade so it’s about a ½ inch from, and parallel to, the cutting board, and slice horizontally through the onion from the stem end toward the root end.
Step 7: Parallel cuts
Slice the onion to within an inch of the root end, then withdraw your knife and reposition it to make another parallel cut above the first one. Again, stop short of cutting all the way through the onion.
Step 8: Reposition knife
Rotate the onion half so the stem end points toward you, and reposition your knife so the blade is perpendicular to the board, cutting vertically from end to end.
Step 9: More parallel cuts
Insert the tip of your knife about an inch from the root end of the onion and a ½ inch from the right side, and slice through to the stem end. Continue repositioning your knife to make parallel cuts to this, all the way to the other side of the onion.
Step 10: Cut vertically
Rotate the onion half back so the stem end is on the right, and position your blade so it’s perpendicular to the board, cutting vertically from side to side.
Tip
Keep the point of the knife on the board and use a steady rocking motion to slice—not saw—the onion with the full length of the blade.
Step 11: Reposition & cut
Slice the onion about a ½ inch from the stem end, straight down to the board, and the cut onion will section itself into multiple pieces. Continue repositioning your knife to make parallel cuts to this, all the way to within an inch of the root end.
Step 12: Pile together
Discard the root end and pile the chopped onion together, then make the same horizontal and vertical cuts though the other half of the onion. You have now chopped an entire onion—and hopefully kept your tears at bay.

Dunya & Desie is een hartverwarmende roadmovie gebaseerd op de succesvolle televisieserie Dunya & Desie, over twee hartsvriendinnen uit Amsterdam Noord. Dunya is Marokkaans, opgegroeid met Ramadan, de moskee en djellaba’s. Desie is zo Hollands als kaas, klompen en leggings.
Op haar 18e verjaardag hoort Dunya van haar ouders dat ze wordt uitgehuwelijkt aan een achterneef, maar daar heeft ze weinig trek in. Toch gaat ze met de familie naar Marokko om hem te ontmoeten.
Ondertussen raakt Desie zwanger van haar rijschoolleraar, die haar laat zitten. Ze besluit op zoek te gaan naar haar biologische vader, die als Nederlander in Marokko blijkt te wonen. Onaangekondigd verschijnt ze in Marokko bij Dunya’s familie, die niet zit te wachten op bezoek van deze blonde Amsterdamse. Dunya besluit dat Desie in Marokko niet alleen op zoek kan gaan naar haar vader en ontsnapt aan haar trouwplannen-smedende familie om met Desie mee te gaan. Samen maken ze een avontuurlijke reis, dwars door Marokko.
Al snel blijkt dat Marokko geen Amsterdam Noord is. Dunya en Desie komen voor een aantal belangrijke keuzes te staan…

Recipe:
* 3/4 cup of white flour
* 1 1/2 tablespoons of white sugar
* 3/4 teaspoon of baking powder
* 1/4 teaspoon of salt
* 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter – Melted
* 7/8 cup of milk
* 1 large egg
* 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla
* 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil
* 4 tablespoons of chocolate chips
In a medium size bowl whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder and the salt.
In another bowl mix together the: melted butter, milk, egg, and vanilla, (wet ingredients).
Add these wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk together until just combined.
Pre-heat large non-stick frying pan for 3-4 minutes on medium heat and add 1 teaspoon of Vegetable oil.
Using a ¼ cup measuring cup, scoop out the batter and pour it into the frying pan. Repeat so there are three pancakes in the pan.
Sprinkle on about 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips on each pancake. Cook the pancakes until bubbles appear on the surface and start to pop. Flip the pancakes and cook until golden brown on the flip side.
Repeat with remaining batter.
Makes six 4-inch pancakes

There are simple tasks and then there are incredibly simple tasks. Boiling water is even simpler than that. But hey, nobody’s calling you a moron—there’s a first time for everything.
Step 1: Choose pot
Choose a pot with a greater volume than the amount of water you plan to boil. Do so in private, so nobody’s there to say, « Uh, duh. »
Step 2: Pour water
Pour fresh, cold tap water into the pot. Make sure there’s at least 3 inches of space between the rim of the pot and the surface of the water.
Tip
If you’re boiling water to cook with (and not just for fun) you’ll be adding something to it, so be sure to leave enough room for whatever you’re cooking, too.
Step 3: Place pot on burner
Turn the burner to high, place the pot on the burner, and cover the pot with a lid that fits snugly. This keeps in the heat and helps the water boil faster.
Step 4: Watch the pot
They say a watched pot never boils, but that’s not literally true. First, steam will form between the water and the lid; next, small bubbles will appear around the bottom and edges of the pot; finally, the bubbles will become large enough to break the surface of the water.
Step 5: Boil water
Once large bubbles are flowing in steady streams from the bottom to the top of the pot, the water is boiling. That’s it! You’ve done it! Cue the trumpets and congratulate yourself—you’re at least as smart as a not-so-smart monkey.

It may look like plain old iced tea, but this drink—invented near Long Island’s Jones Beach in the 1970s—is one potent potation and the East Coast’s answer to the Zombie.
Step 1: Fill with ice
Fill the shaker with ice.
Step 2: Add vodka, rum, & gin
Add 1/2 an ounce of vodka, 1/2 an ounce of rum, and pour in 1/2 an ounce of gin.
Step 3: Add triple sec, tequila, & lemon juice
Continue to add the alcohol. Add 1/2 an ounce of triple sec, now add 1/2 an ounce of tequila, and pour in 1 ounce of lemon juice.
Step 4: Add sugar
Drop in 1 teaspoon of sugar.
Tip
Some recipes will call for sour mix, but using lemon juice and sugar instead can give a fresher, more consistent flavor.
Step 5: Shake
Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
Step 6: Strain into glass
Strain the contents of the shaker into the glass.
Step 7: Fill with ice
Fill the highball glass about halfway with ice.
Step 8: Add cola
Top off the glass with cola to add the color of an iced tea.
Tip
For a Long Beach Iced Tea, swap cranberry juice for the cola.
Step 9: Stir & drink
Add the straw, stir, and sip with caution—this one’s got a nasty undertow.
